The 4Runner engine air filter is a five-minute swap with no tools required on any year — flip the clips, lift the airbox lid, drop the new element in. The part you want is 17801-38051 on a 2010-2024 truck and 17801-0P010 on a 2003-2009. Buy paper, not oiled cotton, and change it at 30,000 miles on pavement or 15,000 if you spend real time on dirt.
A clogged air filter rarely throws a code. It quietly costs you throttle response and a percent or two of fuel economy, and on a dusty truck it eventually starts passing what it can no longer hold. That last part is the one that matters — a filter loaded past its capacity does not block dirt, it leaks it, and the 1GR-FE's mass airflow sensor sits directly downstream. Filter maintenance on this platform is less about horsepower and more about keeping abrasive silica out of an engine that will otherwise run 300,000 miles without complaint.
The two 4Runner generations use different elements and they are not interchangeable, despite both being 4.0L V6 trucks.
2010-2024 (5th gen, 1GR-FE): Toyota 17801-38051, which supersedes the earlier 17801-38050. This is a flat rectangular panel shared with the 2010-2014 FJ Cruiser. Denso 143-3058 is the same element from the OE supplier at a lower price. Wix 49143 and FRAM CA10171 are the common aftermarket paper equivalents.
2003-2009 (4th gen, 1GR-FE / 2UZ-FE V8): Toyota 17801-0P010, which supersedes 17801-31090. Shared with the 2005-2013 Tacoma and 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser.
If you are ordering online and the listing shows both numbers under one part, check the picture. The 4th gen element is noticeably taller in the frame. Getting the wrong one is not dangerous, it will not seat, and you will find out with the hood up.
Paper is the right answer for the overwhelming majority of 4Runners, and it is worth being blunt about why.
Paper (OEM-style disposable): Filters to roughly 98-99% efficiency at the particle sizes that matter, costs $16-25, and gets thrown away. No maintenance, no failure mode beyond neglect. This is what belongs in a truck that sees fire roads and desert washes.
Oiled cotton gauze (K&N and similar): Flows more air, filters less. On a naturally aspirated 4.0L with a stock intake tract, the horsepower difference is inside the noise floor — you will not feel it. What you can feel is the downside: over-oiling after a cleaning leaves an oil film that migrates onto the MAF sensor's hot-wire element, and a contaminated MAF throws lean codes (P0171/P0174) and drives poor fuel trims. Dry synthetic (AEM DryFlow and similar): Splits the difference — reusable, no oil, no MAF risk. Costs $60-70 up front and washes out with water. Defensible for someone who genuinely changes filters every 10,000 miles in dust, less so for anyone else.
The honest verdict: on a dusty truck, filtration efficiency is worth more than airflow, and a $20 paper element replaced on schedule beats a $70 reusable one that gets cleaned when someone remembers.
Toyota's maintenance schedule calls for inspection at 15,000-mile intervals and replacement at 30,000 miles under normal conditions. That number assumes pavement. Realistic intervals:
The common advice to hold the filter up to a shop light and replace it when you cannot see through it is unreliable. A paper element traps fine particulate deep in the media where light still passes, and by the time it visibly darkens end to end it is well past useful. Mileage and conditions are better guides than appearance. What appearance is good for: if you pull it and find leaves, seed pods, or rodent bedding, something upstream needs attention regardless of mileage.
A partially seated lid is the whole failure mode. One unlatched clip lets unfiltered air bypass the element entirely, and it makes no noise to tell you. Check every clip by hand after closing.
Rodent nests are common in trucks that sit. Acorns, insulation, and bedding in the lower airbox get pulled straight into a fresh filter within a few miles. Clear it out before installing, and if you find chewed wiring nearby, deal with that first.
Snorkel owners have a different job. A snorkel changes the intake path but not the filter, and the head unit's pre-cleaner or cyclonic separator needs its own periodic dump. A snorkel does not extend filter life on dust — in some staging-area conditions it shortens it by feeding the box cleaner but faster-moving air.
Do not oil a paper element. People occasionally spray a disposable filter with K&N oil thinking it improves filtration. It restricts flow, sheds oil into the intake, and contaminates the MAF.
If a lean code appears right after a filter change, the usual causes are a dislodged intake boot clamp, a lid gasket pinched by the new element, or MAF contamination from a previously oiled filter. Check physical seal before ordering sensors.

OEM elements are available from any Toyota parts counter and the online dealer sites; Denso and Wix are stocked at RockAuto and most local stores.
