Engine and Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Difficulty 1/50.25–0.5 hrs$30–652021-2026

The engine air filter is the Motorcraft FA-2022 (2.3L and 2.7L both); the cabin filter is the Motorcraft FP-93 / CAF6. Both are 5-minute swaps with no tools beyond a flathead screwdriver — replace the engine filter every 30,000 miles and the cabin filter every 15,000, or sooner if you drive dirt.

Trail dust eats air filters. A clogged engine filter robs throttle response and forces the MAF sensor to work harder; a clogged cabin filter loads the HVAC blower and pumps unfiltered desert grit into your face. Neither one is expensive to replace and both are jobs anyone can do without lifting the truck.

The engine air filter sits in a black plastic airbox on the passenger side of the engine bay, behind the headlight. Four metal spring clips hold the lid down. Pop them open (no tools — fingers, sometimes a flathead to start a stubborn clip), lift the lid, and the filter comes straight up. The FA-2022 is a flat panel rectangle — note orientation before pulling it. Wipe the airbox base clean of dust and leaves before dropping the new filter in, then snap the lid back. If you live somewhere dusty (Arizona, New Mexico, Utah trail country), an aFe Pro Dry S, K&N E-2997, or AEM Brute Force panel filter is a drop-in reusable upgrade. Don't oil reusable filters too heavily — over-oiling fouls the MAF sensor and triggers a check engine light.

The cabin filter lives behind the glove box. Open the glove box, then squeeze both sides inward to release the dampers, and let it drop fully open. A horizontal plastic door is visible on the right side of the cabin — pull the small tab to release it. The old filter slides out (it folds slightly to clear). Note the airflow arrow on the new filter — usually pointing down toward the floor — and slide it in. Close the door, reseat the glove box.

If your truck has been daily-driven on dirt roads, pull the old cabin filter outside before disposal. Pollen, pine needles, and rodent droppings shake out aggressively. Wear gloves.
