Oil Change — 2.3L EcoBoost

Difficulty 1/50.75–1.25 hrs$55–952021-2026

The 2.3L EcoBoost takes 6.2 quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic with a Motorcraft FL-910S spin-on filter — a 45-minute service that you should run every 5,000 miles on a daily-driven 6G, or every 3,000 if the truck sees real dust and water.

Ford's published interval for the 2.3L EcoBoost is 10,000 miles under "normal" conditions and 5,000 under severe. If your Bronco crawls Sedona, fords Salt River, or sits parked in 110-degree Phoenix summers, you're severe service — period. Short oil intervals are cheap insurance against the carbon and fuel dilution that turbocharged direct-injection fours are known for. Run synthetic, run it on time, and you sidestep most of the headline EcoBoost failures.

The factory fluid is Motorcraft Full Synthetic 5W-30 meeting Ford spec WSS-M2C961-A1. Mobil 1 Annual Protection, Pennzoil Platinum, and Valvoline Restore & Protect in the same viscosity all meet or exceed the spec. The 2.3L is one of the more straightforward EcoBoosts to service — single inline turbo, conventional spin-on filter on the driver-side of the block, drain plug visible from below.

Park on level ground and run the engine 5 minutes to warm the oil. Shut down, lift the front, and set jack stands under the frame. Crawl under, pull the engine splash shield (eight 8mm bolts and two push pins), and the drain plug sits at the rear of the pan — 13mm hex, ~22 ft-lbs of torque with a fresh crush washer. Drain takes 3–5 minutes. Spin the FL-910S off by hand or with a strap wrench, wipe the sealing surface clean, smear a film of fresh oil on the new filter's gasket, and hand-tighten three-quarters of a turn past first contact. Refill with 6.2 quarts, run the engine 30 seconds, recheck the dipstick after settling, and inspect for leaks before dropping the truck.

Reset the oil life monitor through the SYNC instrument cluster menu: Settings → Vehicle → Oil Life Reset → Hold OK.
