The factory JL rear bumper is plastic with a swing-arm spare tire carrier rated for stock tire sizes. Running 35" tires on it will eventually crack the mounting and stress the tailgate hinges. A steel rear bumper with a purpose-built tire carrier solves this, and adds trail approach clearance and a solid mounting surface for lights and recovery gear.

**Tire carrier or no carrier:**

If you're running 35"+ tires, you need a dedicated carrier. The factory swing arm isn't rated for the weight. If you're staying at stock tire size, a non-carrier steel bumper is sufficient and cheaper.

**Single-swing vs. dual-swing:**

Single-swing carriers have one door: the spare swings out on a hinged arm attached to the bumper. Dual-swing designs have two doors: one for the spare, one for tailgate access. Dual-swing adds weight and complexity but is the more practical choice for daily drivers who access the cargo area frequently.

**Remove the factory bumper and carrier**

1. Disconnect the license plate light wiring — one connector behind the bumper.

2. Remove the spare tire from the factory carrier.

3. The factory bumper attaches via bolts through the frame rails — typically 15mm or 18mm, four bolts total.

4. Disconnect the backup camera wiring if equipped (connector inside the bumper).

5. Remove the factory carrier swing arm from the tailgate — it bolts to the tailgate itself, usually two or three bolts.

**Install the new bumper**

6. With a helper, position the new bumper against the frame horns and thread the mounting hardware by hand.

7. Confirm the bumper sits level — measure from the top of the bumper to a fixed reference point on both sides.

8. Torque the mounting bolts to spec (typically 55–80 ft-lbs depending on manufacturer).

**Mount the tire carrier**

9. The tire carrier arm bolts to the bumper's hinge point. Thread all bolts before torquing any — carrier hinges need even pressure across all bolt faces.

10. Torque the carrier hinge bolts to manufacturer spec. This is critical: a loose hinge allows the carrier to sag, causing the spare to bounce and the arm to crack at the weld.

11. Mount the spare tire to the carrier. Some carriers include an adjustable tire bracket that needs to be positioned for your wheel's bolt pattern.

**Rewire lighting and camera**

12. Route the backup camera wire through the bumper's provided access point. Most quality bumpers have a rubber grommet for this.

13. Wire the license plate light to the factory connector or a fused tap off the tail light circuit.

A $700–$1,000 rear bumper/carrier for 35" tire use is the realistic budget for quality that won't fail on trail. Spending more buys you better clearance and a carrier rated for larger tires. Under $500, hinge quality becomes questionable for sustained wheeling.
