Converting to Beadlock-Capable Wheels on the Gen 2 and Gen 3 Raptor

The Gen 2 and Gen 3 Raptor factory forged 17x8.5 wheels are "beadlock-capable" — meaning the wheel accepts a bolt-on beadlock ring. The ring is sold separately. For extreme airing-down (under 10 PSI), beadlocks provide meaningful protection. Most Raptor owners don't need them.

"Beadlock-capable" is a specific term. The factory Raptor forged wheels have a machined outer lip that accepts an inner and outer ring system — you can convert a factory wheel into a true beadlock by purchasing and installing the beadlock ring kit. This is not the same as installing a fully separate aftermarket beadlock wheel, though aftermarket options exist too.

A tire bead is the inner edge of the tire that seals against the wheel rim. Under normal inflation (30–45 PSI), the bead is held against the rim by air pressure. If you air down below approximately 8–10 PSI, that clamping force decreases enough that aggressive cornering or lateral force can break the bead — the tire rolls off the rim.

A beadlock clamps the outer tire bead mechanically between the wheel's outer lip and the bolt-on beadlock ring. This mechanical clamping is independent of air pressure. You can run 4–5 PSI in sand or rocky terrain without risk of the tire debeading.

**Cases where beadlocks are overkill:**

Most Raptor owners who want beadlocks are buying them for aesthetics or for occasional hard use. That's a valid choice. But the honest answer is that the truck runs most of its intended mission at 18–25 PSI, which doesn't require beadlock clamping.

Gen 2 and Gen 3 base Raptors come with factory forged aluminum 17x8.5 wheels. These wheels are machined on the outer lip to accept a beadlock ring from Ford Performance. The ring bolts to the wheel using a series of ring bolts at specific torque values.

The conversion requires:

1. Dismount the existing tire from the wheel

2. Install the beadlock ring inner piece against the wheel

3. Mount the tire onto the wheel

4. Install the outer beadlock ring, threading the ring bolts through the ring into the wheel

5. Torque the ring bolts to spec in a star pattern — typically 21–25 ft-lb depending on the ring hardware

6. Inflate to seat the inner bead, then final-inflate to operating pressure

**Critical:** Beadlock ring bolts require periodic re-torquing. After the first 100 miles, retorque. Then every 3,000–5,000 miles or before any extended trail trip. A loose beadlock ring can cause vibration and, in severe cases, tire failure.

**Method Race Wheels 105 Beadlock** — well-established in the Raptor community. 17x8.5 in the correct bolt pattern (6x135mm). Forged, strong, proven. $300–$380 per wheel.

**SOTA Offroad Novakane Beadlock** — more budget-friendly option at $240–$280 per wheel. Heavier than Method but functional. Good choice if you want full beadlock without the full Method price.

When switching to aftermarket wheels, verify the hub bore (Ford F-150 is 87.1mm center bore) and confirm the offset. The factory Raptor wheel runs a high positive offset — going to a significantly different offset changes handling behavior and may affect brake caliper clearance.

Factory TPMS sensors are mounted in the valve stem area and can typically be transferred to aftermarket beadlock wheels. Verify the TPMS sensor mounting style (band-mount vs. valve-stem mount) matches your new wheel's mounting provision. A tire shop can handle the sensor transfer during the tire mounting process.
