The TRX is faster, louder, and more theatrical. The Raptor is more usable, better on fuel, and has a deeper aftermarket. Both are excellent trucks — the right one depends on what you actually do with it.
The Ram TRX and Ford F-150 Raptor occupy the same market position — high-performance factory desert trucks — and are direct competitors. The comparison invites fanboy arguments. This is not that. Both trucks are legitimately impressive. The differences are real and matter for different use cases.
**Ram TRX:** 6.2L supercharged HEMI V8, 702 hp, 650 lb-ft torque. 8-speed automatic. This engine is related to the Hellcat platform. It is genuinely violent in a way that the EcoBoost cannot match for raw character. 0–60 mph in approximately 4.5 seconds.
**Ford Raptor (Gen 3 base):** 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, 450 hp, 510 lb-ft torque. 10-speed automatic. 0–60 mph in approximately 5.4 seconds. This is fast. It is not TRX fast.
**Ford Raptor R:** 5.2L supercharged Predator V8, 700 hp, 640 lb-ft torque. Same architecture as the GT500 engine, detuned slightly for the truck application. The performance gap between the Raptor R and TRX is small. The Raptor R is the right comparison to the TRX from a powertrain perspective.
Both trucks run Fox shocks with similar long-travel architecture. The TRX has 13.1" front travel, 13.0" rear. The Raptor Gen 3 (non-37 Package) has 13.0" front, 14.1" rear. These are close enough that real-world capability over whoops and rough terrain is similar — the driver and terrain matter more than the fractional travel advantage.
Both trucks have been run competitively in desert race conditions. Both are demonstrably capable far beyond what their drivers typically ask of them.
**TRX EPA rated:** 10 city / 14 highway. Real-world mixed driving: 11–13 MPG.
**Raptor Gen 3 EPA rated:** 15 city / 18 highway. Real-world mixed driving: 14–17 MPG.
The fuel economy gap is real and sustained. At 15,000 miles per year, the TRX costs approximately $1,500–$2,000 more per year in fuel at current prices. Over five years, that's $7,500–$10,000 in additional fuel cost compared to the base Raptor. The Raptor R is better than the TRX but worse than the base Raptor (EPA rates the Raptor R at 10 city / 16 highway).
**TRX:** Max tow rating 8,100 lbs.
**Raptor (Gen 3 base):** Max tow rating 8,200 lbs.
Both are limited by the high-performance suspension tuning — the suspension that makes these trucks exceptional in desert terrain is not optimized for heavy towing. If towing over 6,000 lbs regularly is part of the use case, neither truck is the ideal choice for towing-as-primary-purpose. Both can tow, and either handles 6,000 lbs without drama. But a standard F-150 Lariat or Ram Limited will tow more stably and comfortably.
The Raptor has a significantly larger and more developed aftermarket. It has been on the market since 2010 in one form or another, and the community around it is enormous. Suspension kits, bumpers, long-travel upper control arms, skid plates, lighting — all exist in volume with proven options.
The TRX launched in 2021. Its aftermarket is growing but thinner than the Raptor's. If you plan to modify the truck significantly, the Raptor's ecosystem is more manageable to navigate.
Buy the TRX if: you want the V8 experience, don't tow regularly, can absorb the fuel cost, and the 200 additional hp matters to your use case.
Buy the Raptor if: you want a more efficient daily driver that is still capable on desert terrain, plan to modify the truck with a developed aftermarket, or can't justify the TRX fuel bill.
Buy the Raptor R if: you want V8 character and sound, will accept the price premium, and are comparing it directly to the TRX on performance terms.
Neither truck is a mistake. They're both genuinely overbuilt in the best way. The mistake is buying either one and then primarily driving it to work on paved roads — at which point the fuel bill is the story.
