Track Bar Replacement and Upgrade

Difficulty 3/51.5–3 hrs$80–3501993-1998

The front track bar holds the axle laterally centered under the truck. A worn track bar lets the axle dance side to side over bumps, and on a coil-sprung four-link like the ZJ that's a primary cause of death wobble. Replace the bar before chasing anything else if the steering wheel oscillates at speed.

The ZJ front track bar is one of the weakest links in the steering system. The bushing at the frame end fails (sometimes you can see daylight through the bushing eye), and the threaded upper rod end develops play. Both ends contribute to lateral axle slop. Even on a perfectly aligned, stock-height ZJ, a worn track bar will produce wandering steering and feel like a soft tie rod.

Two upgrade paths. Stock-replacement bars (Moog DS1417, Mopar OE) get you back to factory tightness for under $100 — the right call for daily-driven, stock-height ZJs. Adjustable heavy-duty bars (Core 4x4 Cruise Series, Kevin's Offroad Hard-KOR) use DOM tubing, a Johnny Joint or heim at the adjustable end, and a polyurethane or solid bushing at the fixed end. They tighten the front end noticeably and recenter the axle if you've lifted the truck. Plan on $250–$300 for a real heavy-duty kit.

Frame bracket warning: the factory track bar bracket on the frame is stamped steel and bends over time, especially on lifted ZJs. If the frame end of the bar tracks visibly bent, you need a reinforced bracket (StinkyFab and Iron Rock both make them) — installing a heavy-duty track bar onto a bent factory bracket lasts about six months.

Death wobble note. The track bar is one of five components to inspect if you have death wobble. The other four: ball joints, tie rod ends, steering box (sector shaft play), and unit bearings. Replacing the track bar alone solves death wobble maybe 40% of the time. Combine it with ball joint and tie rod checks for an 80–95% cure rate. See the related ZJ death wobble guide.

Service interval: inspect at every oil change. Replace when the bushing tears or when the threaded end has visible play.
