4Runner-Specific Tool Additions
The base kit covers the universal failure points. These additions address what the 4Runner specifically asks for on trail — fastener sizes, engine-specific tooling, and electronic system management.
- 14mm deep socket — The Toyota standard fastener size; appears constantly on 3rd and 4th gen. Carry two.
- Toyota-specific oil filter removal tool — Canister-style filter on the 1GR-FE (4th and 5th gen); the generic strap wrench slips.
- Slip-joint pliers — For vacuum line hose routing; the 3.4L has vacuum lines in awkward locations.
- OBDII scanner — Both generations benefit from live data; the 4.0L E-ATRAC and A-TRAC are electronically managed and fault codes tell you where to look.
Pack Strategy
The 14mm socket will do more work than any other tool in the bag on a 4Runner. Carry two. The canister oil filter tool is a specialty item that lives in your 3/8" drive bag and earns its weight on any oil change or filter service at camp.
The OBDII scanner is a force multiplier on both generations. E-ATRAC and A-TRAC faults that would otherwise leave you guessing are readable in under two minutes. Pack one with a phone app or a standalone unit — either works.
Keep the base kit organized in a fabric roll bag or a small Pelican-style case. The 4Runner-specific tools layer on top — the 14mm sockets and filter tool ride in the same drive bag as the rest of your 3/8" kit. The OBDII scanner lives in the cab, not the tool bag.
On a 3rd gen 3.4L, keep the slip-joint pliers accessible. Vacuum lines on the 3.4L are routed through tight spaces, and if one clips a rock or works loose from vibration, you need to be able to reach and reseat it without unboxing the entire kit.
