5th gen 4Runners (2010–2024) take 1.4 liters of Toyota's 75W transfer case fluid — part 08885-81080. Plan on 30 minutes, two crush washers, and a fluid pump.
Toyota's recommended service interval is 60,000 miles for severe-use and never for normal-use — meaning if you ever tow, drive dusty roads, hit dirt, or live in Phoenix, you fall under severe service. Real-world: change it at 60k regardless. The factory fill is dark amber when new and looks like burnt coffee when worn. The 5th gen V8 RX is gone — this guide covers the 4.0L 1GR-FE with the VF4BM transfer case found in SR5, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
The critical part-number note: the 5th gen takes 75W transfer case fluid, not 75W-90 gear oil. Toyota changed the spec around 2010 to a lighter fluid to reduce drivetrain drag. Part 08885-81080 (sometimes labeled 08885-01806) is the correct fill. Old-school internet advice telling you to use 75W-90 is leftover from 3rd and 4th gen 4Runners. Use the right fluid — your case will thank you.
Pull the 4Runner up onto level ground (ramps or jack stands; do not work on a slope or you'll over- or under-fill). The transfer case sits behind the transmission, easily accessible from below. The fill plug is on the driver's side, upper position, 24mm hex head. The drain plug is on the bottom, also 24mm. Crack the fill plug first — same rule as every other case fluid job. If the fill won't open, you don't want to find that out after the drain is empty on your driveway.
Drain into a clean catch pan so you can inspect the fluid. Light metallic shimmer is normal, chunks are not. Install a fresh crush washer on the drain plug (don't reuse the old one; it won't seal right) and torque to 27 ft-lb. Pump 1.4 liters / 1.47 quarts of fresh 75W through the fill hole — the case is full when fluid trickles out the fill port. Install the fill plug with a new crush washer at 27 ft-lb. Check for leaks after a short drive.
