The 5th gen 4Runner shares the Tacoma's 6x139.7 bolt pattern, which opens the same wide wheel market — but the 4Runner's slightly wider track and taller body mean backspacing in the 4.75"–5.25" range for lifted builds.
The 5th gen 4Runner's factory wheel is a 17x7 alloy with roughly 4.5" of backspacing — a relatively conservative offset. On a lifted 4Runner with UCAs at 2.5"+, moving to a 17x8.5 or 17x9 with 4.75"–5.25" backspacing (0mm to +10mm offset range) gives better tire-to-body clearance while keeping the wheel in the correct geometric position relative to the hub. Too little backspacing (high negative offset) pushes the tire outside the fender — requires flares and increases wheel bearing stress. Too much backspacing (high positive offset) tucks the tire inward toward the upper control arm and inner fender, especially on builds with UCAs.
The 4Runner's hub bore is 106.1mm — the same as the Tacoma and most Toyota 6x139.7 applications. Most aftermarket wheels ship with 108mm bore and a set of hub-centric rings to fit Toyota applications. Verify hub-centric ring inclusion before ordering, and install them — a wheel that's not seated concentrically on the hub bore will vibrate at highway speeds regardless of balance quality.
Method Race Wheels 701 Trail remains the top recommendation for lifted 4Runners. The multi-spoke design sheds mud, the 0mm offset on the 17x8.5 sits correctly for most 2.5"–3" lift builds, and the quality control is excellent. Black Rhino Armory and Fuel Assault are lower-cost alternatives with similar design philosophy — they're heavier than Method but adequate for overland and mild trail use. KMC XD Machete is a budget alloy option that works well for the price.
Beadlock wheels are the correct choice for rock crawling at tire pressures of 8–12 PSI. At those pressures, a standard wheel can unseat the tire bead under side loading on a rock. KMC XD Machete beadlock and similar DOT-compliant designs allow legal street use while providing bead retention at low pressures. Ring bolt torque on beadlocks requires periodic checks — check every few months and after every hard trail session.
