Hydraulic assist is a heavy-tire fix, not a general upgrade. On a JK running 37s and up — especially with a stiff steering box and big, sticky tires — hydro-assist takes the strain off the box and gives you steering authority in the rocks. On 35s and smaller, you do not need it, and adding it can mask a worn front end instead of fixing it.
Hydro-assist adds a hydraulic ram to the tie rod or axle, powered by a ported steering box or an extra pump, so the system pushes the tires instead of asking the factory box to do all the work. The benefit shows up turning 37s against a rock at low speed, where the stock box overheats and flexes.
37-inch tires and up, hard rock use, or a box that's already straining. Pair it with a steering box brace (the added force will crack a sector shaft otherwise) and a steering cooler, because the extra work makes heat. Done right, it transforms low-speed control on a heavy rig.
On 35s and smaller, a healthy factory box with a brace and good linkage steers fine. Reaching for hydro-assist to cure wandering or wobble is the wrong tool — that is a worn track bar, tie-rod, or ball joint, and hydro-assist will only hide it. Fix the front end first.
This is a safety-critical system. Use a proper kit, brace the box, route and secure the lines away from heat and pinch points, and bleed it fully. A failure here is a failure of steering, so it is shop-grade work if you are not confident with hydraulics. Budget for the full system too — a ported box or second pump, the ram and mounts, a brace, a cooler, and quality hose and fittings add up, and doing it halfway is worse than not doing it at all.
