The JK's factory halogen 7-inch headlights are its weakest safety-relevant system after dark, and an LED swap is the highest-value lighting money you can spend on the truck. Buy DOT/SAE-compliant housings with a real beam cutoff, add an anti-flicker harness because the body control module reads an LED's low draw as a burned-out bulb, and aim them on a wall afterward. The cheap ring-light housings are the trap: they throw more raw light in every direction, including into the eyes of oncoming drivers, and they fail within a season or two of trail vibration.
Every JK from 2007 through 2018, 2-door and 4-door, uses the same round 7-inch headlight and the same H13 (9008) connector, which makes this one of the few genuinely bolt-in upgrades on the truck. The work is mechanical — trim ring off, retaining ring out, unplug, plug in, reassemble — and the difficulty lives entirely in choosing the right housing and aiming it correctly.
A headlight's job is to put light on the road ahead of you while putting almost none above the horizontal cutoff, where it lands in oncoming windshields. A quality LED housing uses a projector or a properly engineered reflector to produce a sharp cutoff line: bright below it, dark above it. A low-cost housing with bare emitters and a decorative halo ring produces scatter — high total output, no cutoff, glare in every direction, and a beam that lights the trees more than the pavement.
The practical result is counterintuitive. A 3,000-lumen housing with a real cutoff out-performs a 8,000-lumen housing without one, because the useful light is the light aimed where your eyes are already looking. Marketing lumen figures on unbranded housings are also frequently theoretical emitter ratings rather than measured output.
Look for DOT compliance markings (SAE/DOT stamped in the lens) rather than the phrase "DOT approved" in a listing title. Compliance is self-certified, so the marking is a claim rather than a guarantee, but its absence tells you plenty.

The JK's body control module monitors current draw on the headlight circuit to detect a failed bulb. An LED draws a fraction of what a halogen does, so the module reads the low draw as a burned-out lamp — throwing a warning, and on many trucks producing a visible flicker or strobe as the circuit pulses.
The fix is a decoder harness (sold as an anti-flicker harness or CAN-bus adapter) that presents a resistive load to the circuit so the module sees a normal draw. Some premium housings include the correct load internally and need nothing added. Two notes worth having before you order:
Do not skip the aiming step. An LED that is bright and misaimed is a hazard you inflict on everyone you meet, and it is the single reason LED conversions have a bad reputation with other drivers.
Plug-and-play LED tail lights are a smaller but genuine safety gain: an LED reaches full brightness in a few milliseconds versus roughly a fifth of a second for an incandescent filament, which at highway speed is a few feet of extra stopping distance for the driver behind you.
The predictable side effect is hyper-flash. The factory flasher relies on the current draw of the turn signal bulb to time itself, and an LED's low draw makes it flash roughly twice as fast — the same signal the truck uses to tell you a bulb is out. Two fixes: an LED-compatible flasher relay (cleaner, no wasted heat) or load resistors wired in parallel at each corner (works on any circuit, but they run hot and must be mounted to metal away from anything that will melt).
Headlights and tails run on factory circuits sized for the job. Anything you add beyond them — pods, a light bar, a bumper-mounted scene light — needs its own fused, relay-driven feed rather than a tap into the headlight circuit. That is what the auxiliary switch bank exists for, and adding accessory lighting without one is how a factory harness ends up melted. If your headlights dim noticeably at idle with accessories running, the underlying issue is often supply rather than lighting; start with the battery and charging cable guide.
Safety note: work with the battery disconnected, fuse anything you add at the source, and treat a housing that fogs internally as a failed part rather than a cosmetic annoyance — moisture in a headlight will corrode the connector and eventually take the circuit with it.
Buy a DOT/SAE-compliant housing from the mid tier or better, budget for the decoder harness and possibly an H13-to-H4 adapter, install it in an afternoon, and aim it against a wall before you drive at night. Add LED tails and a proper flasher relay if the budget stretches. The result is the largest usable improvement in night driving you can make to a JK for under $500, and it makes the truck safer for everyone else on the road rather than only for you.
