A rear bumper with an integrated swing-out tire carrier replaces the factory spare mount with a system that can handle 37" tires, adds real rear protection, and incorporates a hitch receiver in one bolt-on package.
The JK's factory rear bumper and tire carrier combination is designed for a 31"–33" spare mounted at the factory height. Once you move to 35" or 37" tires, the factory carrier's pivot hardware, rubber bump stops, and body-mount stress points are working outside their design limits. A dedicated swing-out tire carrier solves this by using a properly rated pivot — typically a 1.5" to 2" bearing-supported hinge — that distributes the weight of a full-size spare across a steel bumper body bolted to the frame. The Smittybilt XRC Gen3 at $799 is the high-volume entry option: it mounts to the factory frame holes, swings out to 90-plus degrees for tailgate access, and includes a 2" hitch receiver. For a JK that will carry a 35" spare on moderate trails, it's appropriately specified.
The key decision point in this category is spare tire weight. A 37x12.5R17 in a load range E mounted on a steel wheel weighs approximately 85–90 lbs. At that weight, a cheap pivot wears within 18–24 months and the carrier starts to sag, binding against the body and eventually stressing the mounting points. Poison Spyder, LOD, and Warn all use heavier-duty pivot hardware with greaseable zerks — they're designed to carry a 37" spare for the life of the build without adjustment. If your tire size is 37" or your build is a serious overlander where the carrier opens and closes repeatedly, the extra investment in the $1,100–$1,500 tier is justified by the pivot quality alone.
Safety chains and secondary latches are worth examining on any tire carrier. The carrier swinging open at highway speed — either from a failed latch or a missing safety chain — is a severe hazard. All listed options include a primary latch; Warn and LOD include secondary safety chain provisions by default. Smittybilt's base kit does not — add a safety chain attachment point before putting the rig on the road. Hitch integration on all listed bumpers uses a 2" receiver, but confirm the receiver is fully integrated into the bumper body and not a bolt-on addition — the LOD and Warn designs weld the receiver into the main bumper structure, which is the correct approach for towing.
On 2007–2011 JKs, the factory tailgate hinges and latch can bind with aftermarket bumpers if the swing-out arc is not correctly aligned. Budget extra time on the initial install to adjust the carrier latching geometry before final torque.
