Replace JL shocks when they leak, fade on long trails, or no longer settle after a bump — match shock length to your current lift height, not your future plans.
Stock JL shocks are tuned soft for on-road comfort. They fade quickly on washboard, body-control gets sloppy after 60,000 miles, and the rear shocks are usually the first to leak. If you've added a lift, the stock shocks are likely topped out before full droop — meaning you've got internal damage even if they aren't visibly leaking.
The decision tree is short. Stock height and want a better ride? Bilstein 5100 monotubes (33-292625 front, 33-316321 rear for 0-1.5" lift, 33-292632 rear for 2-3" lift) are bolt-in upgrades at around $110 per corner. Lifted 2-3"? Same Bilstein 5100s in the lifted length. Lifted 3"+? Step up to remote-reservoir shocks like Fox 2.0 Performance Series IFP, Bilstein 8112, or King 2.5 — your shocks will see more heat and travel.
Avoid the temptation to put a 4" lift shock on a stock vehicle. The shock will top out at full extension, which damages the internal valving and gives you a harsh ride at any extension.
Install is the most straightforward suspension job on the JL. Unlike spring or control arm work, shock replacement doesn't touch alignment geometry. One side at a time, no spring tension released. Stock JL shock mounting uses 18mm and 21mm fasteners. Mopar service spec for shock-to-axle bolt is 75 ft-lb, shock-to-frame upper bolt is 60 ft-lb — confirm against the included instructions for your specific shock as some aftermarket units use different hardware.
Pre-extend new shocks before installing them upright (most monotubes ship gas-charged at full extension, but pre-cycling them by hand helps seat the valving). Don't install a shock upside down — the IFP gas charge needs to be at the top for proper damping.
