A 3.5"+ lift on the JL changes the rear driveshaft angle enough that the stock slip yoke — riding on a fixed-length driveshaft — produces vibration at highway speed. The SYE replaces the slip yoke with a fixed output yoke and pairs it with a longer, double-cardan driveshaft that handles the steeper angle cleanly.
The JL Wrangler's rear driveshaft uses a slip yoke at the transfer case output. At stock ride height this works — the driveshaft angle is shallow enough that the slip yoke doesn't bind or produce vibration. Add 3.5" or more of lift and the angle steepens past the point where the slip yoke can handle it. The result is a vibration that appears at 45–70 mph, often described as a rhythmic buzz or drone that changes with speed. It's not subtle once it sets in.
The SYE (Slip Yoke Eliminator) kit replaces the stock slip-yoke output flange with a fixed output flange and internally relocates the slip point. This converts the transfer case output to a fixed yoke, which then mates to a longer, CV-joint driveshaft. The CV joint at the front of the driveshaft cancels the u-joint vibration that causes the problem at steep angles. The result: a JL lifted to 4.5" or more that drives on the highway like a stock truck.
The JL uses different transfer cases depending on trim and model year. Rubicon models use the NV241OR Rock-Trac (2-speed, 4:1 low range). Most non-Rubicon JLs use the MP1222 (full-time 4WD option) or the MP3023 selectable unit. Confirm your transfer case before ordering — SYE kits are transfer case-specific, and a kit built for the NV241OR will not fit the MP1222. Pull the skid plate and read the transfer case ID tag if you aren't sure.
Order the SYE kit and the replacement rear driveshaft together, from the same vendor if possible. The driveshaft length must be measured for your specific lift height and suspension type — most vendors require you to specify lift height and whether you have a long-arm or short-arm suspension at the time of order. A mismeasured driveshaft is the most common reason SYE installs produce vibration post-install.
Tom Woods is the premier shop for this application. Their kits are built to order, the driveshaft comes indexed for correct phasing, and their support for JL-specific nuances is established. Advance Adapters makes a quality kit for the NV241OR specifically. Rough Country's bundled option is the budget path and works for moderate-lift builds.
