Front Differential Fluid Change

Difficulty 2/50.5–1 hrs$25–502005-2015, 2016-2023

Drain the front differential, refill with 1.5 liters of 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil, torque the fill plug to 29 ft-lbs and the drain plug to 48 ft-lbs — every 30,000 miles for trail-driven Tacomas.

The 2nd-gen (2005–2015) and 3rd-gen (2016–2023) Tacoma share the same front differential service procedure. Capacity is 1.5 liters (1.58 quarts). Buy two quarts to have enough for spillage and a clean refill. Toyota specifies 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil (P/N 08885-81060) — about $22/qt at the dealer. 75W-90 GL-5 from Valvoline, Royal Purple, or Mobil 1 is widely accepted as a drop-in substitute and runs roughly half the price. The Toyota dealer fluid is the safe answer; the aftermarket synthetic 75W-90 is the value answer.

The service interval Toyota publishes is "inspect at 30k, replace as needed" — which for most owners means never. That's fine for a Tacoma that lives on pavement. For any Tacoma that sees dirt roads, washboard, water crossings, or trail use, drain and refill every 30,000 miles. Water intrusion shows up as milky-tan fluid that smells sour. Metal in the fluid means the ring and pinion are wearing — drain it, replace the fluid, and check again in 5,000 miles to see if the trend continues.

The drain and fill plugs are both 10mm hex (Allen) heads, located on the front differential housing. Drain plug is on the bottom; fill plug is on the side. As with every drain-and-fill: break the fill plug loose FIRST. If the fill plug is seized and you've already drained the diff, you can't refill it and the truck is stuck. Once the fill plug is loose, then crack the drain plug.

Crush washers should be replaced with each service. They're $2 from Toyota (P/N 12157-10010) and they're what makes the seal — reusing an old crushed washer is the most common cause of weeping drain plugs. Torque matters here. Drain plug: 48 ft-lbs. Fill plug: 29 ft-lbs. Overtighten and you'll strip the aluminum housing — that's a $1,000 mistake.
