Recovery Gear Starter Kit for the Tacoma

Difficulty 1/51–2 hrs$250–6002005-2015, 2016-2023

A kinetic rope, D-ring shackles, traction boards, and a snatch block cover the majority of recovery scenarios you'll encounter on the trail — and the IFS Tacoma's limited factory recovery points mean you need to address attachment hardware before heading out.

The factory Tacoma front tow hook (2nd gen has a hook mounted to the frame; 3rd gen varies by trim) is functional as a recovery point for straight pulls but is not an appropriate anchor for D-ring shackle attachment without inspection. On some 3rd gen trims the front tow hook is body-mounted rather than frame-mounted — verify yours before using it in a recovery. A steel front bumper with rated D-ring tabs removes all ambiguity. For rear recovery, the receiver hitch is the correct anchor; add a 3/4" D-ring hitch receiver shackle mount ($25–$40) to use it with a kinetic rope.

The kinetic recovery rope is the most important item in this kit. A kinetic (stretchy) rope — like Bubba Rope's 7/8" diameter model — stores and releases energy as a vehicle bounces free, creating a pull that's far more effective than a static strap and much gentler on both vehicles' frames. Static tow straps work in a pinch but they shock-load the recovery points. The kinetic rope is the right tool.

Maxtrax traction boards are the self-recovery solution for when there's no second vehicle. Dig out the tire, slide the Maxtrax under the drive wheels, and drive the truck off them. They work on sand, mud, and snow — the ridged polymer surface grips both the tire and the ground to create traction where the tire has none. They're bulky but worth the space in the bed. The ARB Recovery Kit bundles a kinetic rope, snatch block, tree saver strap, and gloves in a storage bag — it's a solid all-in-one starting point if you don't want to source pieces individually.
