Skid Plate Kit for the Tacoma — Engine, Transfer Case, and Fuel Tank

Difficulty 2/52–4 hrs$499–9992005-2015, 2016-2023

The Tacoma's factory skid plates are thin stamped steel that protects the oil pan and not much else — a full aftermarket skid system covers the transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential with 3/16" or thicker steel that can take a direct hit from a rock.

The factory Toyota skid plate covers the engine oil pan with roughly 1/8" stamped steel. That's adequate for minor debris and gravel but will deform on a direct rock strike and potentially contact the oil pan itself. Aftermarket full skid kits replace and extend that protection to cover everything under the truck: oil pan, transmission, transfer case, and fuel tank. For a truck that sees regular rocky terrain, this is baseline protection — not a luxury add-on.

What each skid covers matters when evaluating kits. A full-coverage system includes the front crossmember and oil pan skid, a center transmission and transfer case skid (often the largest piece), and a rear fuel tank skid. Some kits add a rear differential skid. CBI Offroad and ASFIR kits cover all four areas. Prinsu's kit is priced lower but covers the oil pan and transfer case — verify fuel tank coverage before ordering if you're doing rocky terrain where the rear tank is exposed.

Material choice is steel vs aluminum. Steel (3/16" to 1/4") is heavier but more impact-resistant — it dents but doesn't crack. Aluminum (1/4" to 3/8") is lighter and resists corrosion better, but a sharp rock strike at speed can crack aluminum skids in a way steel won't. For dedicated trail use with rock impacts, steel is the more reliable choice. For overland use where the primary concern is high-centering on rocks, aluminum is a reasonable compromise at lower weight.

Front crossmember gussets are a detail worth checking. The Tacoma's front crossmember is a known weak point under heavy off-road use — it can crack at the welds. Some skid kits include reinforcing gussets that tie into the crossmember mounting. CBI and ASFIR kits include this feature; Prinsu's does not. If you're doing serious trail work, the crossmember gusset is worth paying for.
