TJ Fuel Filter Replacement

Difficulty 2/50.5–1.5 hrs$15–351997-2002, 2003-2006

The TJ fuel filter is under the Jeep on the driver's side frame rail, about midway between the front and rear axles. It uses spring-lock quick-connect fittings — you need the right disconnect tool or the job becomes a wrestling match with flammable fuel spraying everywhere.

Chrysler recommends replacing the TJ fuel filter every 30,000 miles but that interval assumes the Jeep has been fueled at reputable stations without water intrusion. If you've run off-road with the fuel cap seal compromised or fueled in areas with questionable fuel quality, every 20,000 miles is more conservative and appropriate. A clogged fuel filter shows up as hesitation under load, hard starting when hot, or a consistent lean code (P0171) that the O2 sensor keeps calling out.

The job is rated difficulty 2 because of the fuel pressure. You're not doing hard mechanical work — you're working with fuel-pressurized lines that will spray when disconnected. Eye protection is non-negotiable. Work with the engine cold (at least 30 minutes after shutdown) and have rags under the filter before you disconnect anything.

Spring-lock disconnect tools are sold as a set for around $8–$12 at any auto parts store. The TJ uses two sizes. Without the right tool, you'll squeeze the retaining tabs unevenly and they'll break before releasing.
