Chromoly axle shafts (Yukon, Ten Factory) bring the D35 into reliable territory for 32-33s, but the C-clip design still limits how hard you can push it.
If you're not ready for an axle swap, chromoly D35 shafts buy you reliable 32"-33" tire use. Stock D35 shafts are weak 27-spline carbon steel; chromoly versions use 4340 alloy and are roughly 35% stronger.
Options:
The chromoly upgrade addresses the SHAFT weakness but does NOT fix the c-clip ejection risk. For that, you also need C-clip eliminators (see separate entry).
Value calculus: chromoly D35 shafts + c-clip eliminators + locker = $700-900. A used Ford 8.8 Explorer rear swap with disc brakes, locker, and 31-spline shafts = $600-1000. The 8.8 swap is the better value above 33s. For 32s on a mild-trail rig that already has the D35, the chromoly path is reasonable.
