WJ Grand Cherokee (1999-2004) and ZJ (1993-1998) axles are sometimes swapped into XJs. Pros and cons vs other swaps.
WJ and ZJ axles are bolt-up similar to XJ in many respects but have important differences:
WJ Front (1999-2004):
High-pinion Dana 30 with disc brakes.
Coil/control arm mounts close to XJ but not identical — may require minor modification.
Front disc brakes (better than XJ stock).
8.25" ring gear front Dana 30 — slightly bigger than XJ Dana 30.
~$400-600 salvage.
WJ Rear (1999-2004):
8.25" Dana 35-style with 29-spline. Stronger than XJ D35.
Disc brakes standard.
Width similar to XJ.
~$300-500 salvage.
Note: this is the "D35c" or "Dana 35 HD" — more like an 8.25 in capability.
ZJ Front (1993-1998):
Standard Dana 30 with vacuum disconnect (early) or non-disconnect (late).
Disc brakes.
Very similar to XJ front; sometimes preferred for disc brake upgrade in earlier XJs.
~$300-500 salvage.
ZJ Rear (1993-1998):
8.25" Dana 35 or 8.25 Chrysler (depending on trim/year/option).
Some had Dana 44 (5.9L Limited 1998).
Disc brakes standard.
~$400-700 salvage.
For most builders, the WJ rear and ZJ rear are budget upgrades from the D35 with disc brakes included. Less common than the 8.8 swap but more manageable (closer width, similar geometry).
Key consideration: ZJ/WJ axle gears must match your XJ front; you may need to re-gear one axle if ratios don't match.
