Roll-on bedliner on the roof and hood is the XJ's traditional fix for peeling clearcoat. Cheap, durable, looks intentional. Raptor Liner, Herculiner, or Monstaliner kits.
XJ roofs and hoods get the worst sun exposure. Factory clearcoat peels off in sheets by 2005-2010 on most XJ. Repainting properly is $1500+. Roll-on bedliner is the budget answer — $50-150 in materials, looks rugged, won't peel.

Process:
1) Mask off everything you don't want lined. Use plenty of newspaper.
2) Sand the existing paint with 80-120 grit. Don't skip — bedliner peels off smooth paint.
3) Clean with grease+wax remover or denatured alcohol.
4) Pour and roll (or spray with Schutz gun). Texture comes from a foam or napped roller — heavier nap = more texture.
5) 2-3 coats, drying between coats per product instructions.
6) Cure 24-48 hours before driving in rain.
Result: a textured rubberized coating that hides the peeling clearcoat, doesn't reflect sun glare into windshield, accepts tools+gear on roof without scratching, and looks intentional.
Good option for hood, roof, and rear cargo trim. Some builders do the entire vehicle — turns the XJ into an instant overlander aesthetic.
