Add hood vents/louvers to release engine bay heat. Especially helpful for highly-modified 4.0L or stroker builds, and for AC efficiency in summer. Many XJ-specific options: NACA ducts, JCR/Hellwig louvers, or aluminum drop-in panels.
The XJ engine bay traps heat. The hood is flat sheet metal with no factory vents (except on early 4.0L models with a tiny vent). For stock 4.0L this is OK, but for a stroker, supercharger, or hard-use rig, hood vents are nearly mandatory.
Options:
(1) JCR Offroad XJ louvered hood panel: replaces a center section of the hood with a louvered aluminum panel. Bolt-in (with some trimming of stock hood). ~$280. Most popular.
(2) Generic 'NACA' duct or aftermarket scoop: bond/rivet onto hood, cut hole below. Cheap (<$50) but looks cheap.
(3) Aluminum louver inserts: 8x12 or larger louvers from Spectre, Trans-Dapt. Cut hole, rivet/screw in. ~$30-60.
(4) DIY hood pop / hood vent: stand the hood off the cowl by 1/2-1" with rubber spacers and trim back the cowl rubber seal — lets heat escape at the back of the hood. Free, looks subtle. Common on race trucks.
(5) Full aftermarket fiberglass/carbon hood with built-in vents: rare for XJ, expensive ($600+), heavy fragile.
Waterproofing: louvered vents WILL let rain into the engine bay. Run a small drip rail underneath or accept that the engine compartment will get wet. Distributor and air filter must be located out of the drip zone or use a sealed air filter housing.
