OEM-style replacement fan clutch (Hayden, Four Seasons). $60 part, 30-minute job, fixes most idle-overheat issues.
The fan clutch is a thermal-viscous coupling that locks the fan to the water pump shaft when underhood temps rise. After 100k-150k miles the silicone fluid in the clutch breaks down and the clutch slips even when hot — fan barely spins, no airflow at idle, instant overheating in traffic.
Test by spinning the fan with engine off and cold (should freewheel 1-3 revs) versus engine hot at idle (should be locked or nearly so). If you can spin the fan by hand at full operating temp, replace the clutch.
The Hayden 2787 is the standard replacement and is a 'severe duty' upgrade over OEM — works harder, slightly more parasitic loss but better cooling. The Four Seasons 36711 is the OE-equivalent. Cost: $50-90.
Install is 30 minutes with a fan clutch wrench (or two crescent wrenches) and a 15/16" combination wrench for the water pump nut. The clutch threads onto the water pump pulley — note that some XJs have left-hand thread, especially the Renix-era reverse-rotation pump (see water pump entry).
