Cracked or missing fan shroud cuts cooling 30-40%. Most overlooked free fix on a used XJ.
The plastic fan shroud directs airflow from the fan through the radiator core instead of around it. After two decades of underhood heat the plastic gets brittle and cracks, especially around the upper mounting tabs and the lower lip. Many XJs lose the lower portion entirely and the owner doesn't notice — until summer.
With a missing or broken shroud, the fan spins air around the edges instead of pulling it through the rad. Cooling capacity drops 30-40% at idle. The truck will overheat in traffic on a hot day but be fine on the highway (where ram air does the work).
Fix: replace the shroud. Mopar PN 52028238AA (97-01) or appropriate year. Junkyard pull is $20-50, new Mopar is $120-180. Reproductions exist from Crown and Omix-Ada — fitment varies, OEM is best.
While you're in there, check the lower rubber air dam under the front bumper that directs air up into the rad. Most XJs have lost this entirely. It's a real cooling component, not trim.
