Replace the three undersized factory power cables (battery-to-alternator B+, battery negative to chassis, engine block ground) with 1/0 AWG (or 2 AWG minimum) welding cable to unlock alternator output and stabilize voltage.
The Big-3 is the single highest ROI electrical upgrade on an XJ. The factory uses a fusible link and ~8 AWG between the alternator and battery, ~6 AWG for the battery-to-chassis ground, and a thin braided strap from the engine to body. All three are voltage-drop bottlenecks.
Replace each with 1/0 AWG (welding cable / fine-strand is more flexible than SAE battery cable) terminated with crimped + soldered + heat-shrunk lugs. Add a 200A ANL or MIDI fuse within 12" of the battery positive on the new B+ run. Use star washers under every ground termination and clean to bare metal.
Three runs: (1) Battery+ to alternator B+ stud, (2) Battery- to engine block AND to body/frame, (3) Engine block (intake manifold bolt is a popular spot) to firewall/body. Many builders add a 4th ground from the body to the frame as well.
