Shorty Header (JBA, Pacesetter)

Difficulty 2/53–6 hrs$250–5501991-1995, 1996, 1997-2001

Drop-in replacement for the cast manifold without the long primary tubes. Fits in the stock location, more manageable install, smaller gains than long-tube.

A shorty header keeps the OEM downpipe interface but replaces the cast iron manifold with a tubular stainless or mild-steel piece. The main motivation is the cracking issue — a shorty solves the durability problem without the fitment headaches of a long-tube. Gains are modest (3-6 whp on stock engine) but it's a meaningful upgrade for a daily driver that needs the cracked manifold replaced anyway.

JBA Cat4Ward shorty (PN 1528S) is the most popular and fits cleanly with the stock heat shield and EGR setup. Pacesetter is the budget option and fits less well. Banks made a shorty for a while but discontinued it; the Borla long-tube replaced that slot in their catalog.

If you're going stroker, skip the shorty and go long-tube. If you're keeping the truck stock and the manifold cracked, JBA shorty is the right call.
