Drop-in Walbro 255 LPH pump for any stroker, supercharged, or 24+ lb/hr injector setup. OEM pump is borderline for stock 4.0 over 200k miles.
The factory in-tank pump moves ~140 LPH at the stock 48 psi rail pressure. That's adequate for stock 19 lb/hr injectors but starts running out of headroom at 24 lb/hr (stroker) and is hopeless at the 30+ lb/hr you'd want for forced induction.
The Walbro 255 LPH (GSS342) is the universal hotrod fuel pump. Drops into the XJ pump bucket with minor modification to the wiring connector and pump cradle. Plenty of writeups; the most cited is the Cherokee Forum DIY thread.
Install steps:
1. Run tank low
2. Drop tank (eight bolts, two skid plate bolts, fuel filler hose, electrical, three lines)
3. Pull pump assembly
4. Swap pump unit, transferring sock filter and pressure regulator
5. Reinstall
While the tank is down, do the fuel filter, sock, gas tank skid plate inspection, and rear brake/fuel hard line inspection. All ages of XJ have fuel hard line corrosion near the rear axle.
For stock 4.0 daily drivers with no power issues: don't bother. The OEM pump in good condition flows enough. The Walbro is for builds.
