Stock XJ console is flimsy, often broken, and not lockable. Replace with Tuffy Security Console for lockable secure storage, or a full custom console with cup holders + USB.
XJ stock console: thin plastic, often broken hinge, no lock. Three main upgrade paths:
(1) Tuffy 007 Security Console: 16-gauge steel construction, deadbolt key lock, fits 1984-1996 XJ. About $300. Tuffy 009 fits 1997-2001. Rock-solid, theft-resistant, but boxy and not pretty.
(2) Rough Country / Smittybilt console: cheaper steel-construction lockable options around $150-200. Not as robust as Tuffy.
(3) Custom builder consoles: NAXJA member-made consoles often combine cup holders, USB ports, lockable storage, and radio gear mounts. $200-500.
(4) Console delete + center floor mount: some builders remove the factory console entirely and build a custom flat-top mount that holds gauges, USB ports, switch panel. Lots of room for cabling under.
Tuffy specifically: comes with a foam liner to protect contents. Cup holder integration on later models. Optional MOLLE / pistol-storage configurations. Key code can be re-keyed.
Note: the parking brake handle protrudes from the side of the XJ console — make sure your replacement doesn't interfere. Tuffy's design accounts for it.
