Every XJ over 15 years old has a cracked dashboard from UV/heat. CAUTION: there is no perfect fix. Options are dash cap (cosmetic overlay), full dash replacement (rare/expensive), or dash mat (cover only).
The XJ dashboard cracks at the windshield edge, around the defrost vents, and around the speaker grilles. This is universal — UV degrades the polyurethane skin. CAUTION: NO FIX IS PERFECT. Each option has tradeoffs:
(1) Dash cap (Coverlay, Dashtop): a hard ABS plastic shell that glues over the existing dash, hiding cracks. Coverlay 18-525 fits 1984-1996 XJ; 18-625 for 1997-2001. ~$250-350. Pros: durable, doesn't crack again, multiple colors. Cons: looks like a cap (subtle seam at edges), adhesion can fail in extreme heat, hard to remove if you don't like it.
(2) Dash mat (Coverking, Dashmat): carpet/fabric cover over the dash. ~$50. Pros: cheap, hides cracks, dampens sound. Cons: looks like a dash mat (not for everyone), traps heat, blocks defroster slightly.
(3) Used dash from a desert-state XJ: rare to find uncracked. Expect $200-400 plus shipping (it's huge). Replacement requires pulling the entire instrument cluster, A/C ducts, and dash bolts — half a day's work. The crack will eventually appear on the replacement.
(4) DIY repair: SEM Color Coat after filling cracks with bondo. Looks bad — don't bother unless you're keeping the truck a year.
The community answer: dash cap is the most permanent visual fix. If the truck is rough, live with the cracks.
