1991-1995 XJs use a distributor cap/rotor. 1996+ are coil-on-distributor with no rotor service. Mopar caps with brass terminals outlast aftermarket aluminum.
Renix (1987-1990) and HO 1991-1995 XJs use a conventional distributor cap and rotor. From 1996 to 2001 the XJ runs a 'wasted spark' style coil rail mounted to the distributor housing but with no rotor service item - the distributor still spins, it contains the cam position sensor. For pre-96 caps: Mopar OE caps (Standard Motor Products DST1535 equivalent) use brass terminals that resist pitting; cheap aluminum caps wear quickly. Inspect for carbon tracking (gray streaks between terminals) and corroded contacts. Replace cap and rotor together every 30k miles or whenever the plug wires get replaced. The rotor screws to the top of the distributor shaft with two Phillips screws; the cap clips with two spring clips. Mark wire positions before pulling them off the old cap.
