Dana 35 rear holds ~2 quarts, Chrysler 8.25 holds 4.4 pints (2.1 qt). Add 4 oz friction modifier if Trac-Lok equipped.
Two rear axles ran in XJ: the Dana 35C (1984-2001, depending on package) and the Chrysler 8.25 (1997-2001 on most V6/I6 packages, and earlier sporadically). Dana 35 capacity is approximately 1.7 to 2.0 quarts of 80W-90 or 75W-140 if towing. 8.25 holds 4.4 pints (2.08 L) and is the preferred axle of the two - 27-spline pre-97, 29-spline 97-01. Both use a stamped cover with RTV (no paper gasket). If your Jeep has a Trac-Lok limited slip (rare from the factory), add 4 oz of friction modifier (Mopar 4318060 or equivalent) to prevent chatter during low-speed turns. Run 75W-140 if you tow regularly or run 33+ tires; 80W-90 is fine for stock builds. Confirm fill level with the rig parked level - the fluid should be within 1/4 inch of the fill plug.
