1997-2001 XJ has in-tank module combining pump, filter, regulator, and level sender. Bosch OE or Carter P75040M. Tank drop required.
The 1997-2001 XJ uses an in-tank fuel pump module that integrates the pump, fuel filter, pressure regulator, and fuel level sender into a single assembly with a lock-ring mount on top of the tank. Replacement requires dropping the tank: park on jack stands, drain fuel through a siphon (the OEM tank vent makes this slow), disconnect fuel lines and electrical at the module, support the tank with a jack, remove two skid plate bolts and the two tank strap bolts (often rusted - see gas tank strap entry), lower the tank, twist the lock ring off (special spanner or careful chisel work). Install the new module with new lock ring gasket. Brand matters: Bosch is OE quality; Carter P75040M is the next-best mainstream choice; Airtex modules have a poor reputation among XJ owners. Avoid generic 'BlackHorse' or other no-name modules - they fail within months. Cost runs $80-250 depending on brand. After install, prime the pump by cycling the key three times before cranking.
