Reading OBD-II Codes (1996-2001)

Difficulty 1/50.1–0.5 hrs$0–1001996, 1997-2001

From 1996, all XJ has standard OBD-II port under driver dash. Any scanner reads codes. Innova 3030, BlueDriver, or Foxwell NT301 recommended.

1996 was the first year for OBD-II in the XJ. The diagnostic connector is under the driver dash to the left of the steering column. Any generic OBD-II scanner reads codes, but Chrysler-specific codes (P1xxx range) require a scanner with manufacturer enhanced data or a free app like FORScan/JScan equivalents on Android. The Innova 3030 ($60) is a basic standalone reader; the BlueDriver Bluetooth dongle ($100) pairs with a phone and gives much better diagnostic depth including OEM-specific Chrysler codes; Foxwell NT301 ($70) sits in between with ABS code reading included. For free, AutoZone, O'Reilly, and Advance Auto Parts all read codes at no cost - useful but you can't clear or watch live data. Key XJ codes to know: P0300 random misfire (plugs/wires/cap), P0320 CKP/CMP no-signal (CPS), P0420 cat efficiency (downstream O2 or actual cat), P0455 large evap leak (gas cap).
