The intermediate steering shaft has two U-joints that develop play. Common contributor to death wobble. Borgeson 000937 is the gold-standard replacement.
The intermediate steering shaft connects the column to the steering box and has two U-joints (sometimes one U-joint and one rag joint depending on year). With age, these joints develop angular play that translates as steering wheel rotation without any wheel movement, contributing significantly to death wobble (the violent steering shake at certain speeds). Diagnose: with engine off and front wheels straight ahead, rock the steering wheel back and forth gently while a helper watches the shaft below the firewall - any rotational play at the joints indicates wear. The Borgeson 000937 (1984-2001 XJ) is a fully sealed, greaseable replacement shaft with new joints; it directly bolts in with no modification and is universally recommended in the community. Cost about $220. Alternative is a junkyard shaft from a low-mile XJ or rebuild kit, but the Borgeson is the right answer. Pair with a steering box adjustment or swap (see related entry) and a quality track bar to truly cure death wobble.
