Plastic clips on the window regulator break and the glass falls inside the door. Common on power and manual windows. Aftermarket regulator $40-70.
The XJ uses a sector-gear style window regulator with plastic clips that grip the glass. The clips become brittle and snap, dropping the window into the door cavity. Both manual and power windows share this problem; power windows compound it because the motor strains and burns out. Replacement: remove the door panel (pry the inner door handle bezel, unscrew the window crank or trim screws, pop the panel clips with a panel tool), peel back the plastic moisture barrier (resealable with butyl tape if torn), unbolt the regulator (six bolts through the inner door skin), maneuver out through the speaker hole. Dorman 749-573 (driver) and 749-572 (passenger) are the common aftermarket choices; Mopar OE 55235203/55235204 is double the price but lasts longer. Tape the glass up to the door frame before unbolting the regulator so it does not fall further.
