1993-1998 ZJ Grand Cherokee and 1998-2003 Dodge Durango steering boxes have larger internal sectors and bolt directly to XJ frames. The classic XJ steering upgrade — with two good donor options.
The 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) used a larger Saginaw steering box with bigger internal sector, more output torque, and better feedback. The ZJ box bolts directly to the XJ frame using the stock mounting holes and uses the same pitman arm splines as the XJ box. The result is much improved steering response, less play, and better wheel-return feel on lifted XJs running larger tires.
**The Durango alternative:** The 1998-2003 Dodge Durango used a similar Saginaw-based box that also bolts into the XJ with no modifications. The Durango box has a slightly larger piston cylinder (~1/4" bigger than stock XJ) and a heavier duty case, resulting in more power assist and roughly 3 turns lock-to-lock vs. 3.5 on the stock box. The internals are similar to the ZJ unit — it's not dramatically stronger, but it's a valid donor and often cheaper or more manageable to find than a ZJ box in certain markets. One known caveat: some early Durango boxes have a raised flange on the cylinder cap that can limit full lock-to-lock travel when the front axle is flexed. If you lose steering range after the swap, remove the spacer inside the piston cylinder.
Donor box: pull a ZJ from a 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee at the salvage yard (~$40-80), or a Durango box from a 1998-2003 Durango (~$40-60). Buy rebuilt from Cardone or NAPA if you want a warranty. 1999+ WJ Grand Cherokee boxes do NOT bolt up — different mounting.
Install: drop the stock XJ box (3 bolts on the frame side, pitman arm nut, pressure and return lines, steering shaft coupling). Bolt up the donor box. Reattach lines (same fittings). Reattach steering shaft and pitman arm. Bleed power steering. Done.
Neither swap fixes death wobble on its own but eliminates one variable (loose stock box). Pair with an HD pitman arm for best results. Pre-1991 XJs use a different steering shaft and may need an adapter; verify before purchase.
