AW4 vs Alternatives (When to Swap)

Difficulty 1/50 hrs$01987-1990, 1991-1995, 1996, 1997-2001

Almost never. The AW4 holds 350+ lb-ft and lasts forever. Swap only for V8 power level (4L60E, 4L80E) or manual conversion (AX-15/NV3550).

When to keep the AW4: stock 4.0L, stroker 4.0L (4.6 / 4.7), mild towing, daily driving, wheeling on 33s or 35s, overland. The AW4 handles all of this without complaint when fluid is fresh and cooler is added.

When to swap:

1. V8 conversion: an LS swap (5.3L, 6.0L LQ4) or 4.7L Magnum pushes the AW4 past its 350-ish lb-ft comfortable ceiling. Pair with a 4L60E (cheap, common), 4L80E (heavy duty, big tunnel mod), or 5R55W (for 4.6 Modular Ford swaps). Costs $1500-3500 with adapter plate, trans, converter, mounts.

2. Manual conversion: AW4 to AX-15 or NV3550 for those who want control. Big project — pedal box, hydraulics, console, wiring, t-case adapter, trans crossmember. $1500-3500 in parts and time.

3. Catastrophic failure with no rebuild interest: a junkyard AW4 is $300-600 and well within DIY swap territory. Don't switch trans families to escape a single AW4 failure.

The AW4 is one of the best things about the XJ. Most owners who 'switch' regret it. If you're hot-rodding to 4.6 stroker, the AW4 with a Transgo SK is perfect. If you're going V8, you're picking a different transmission anyway. Otherwise, leave it alone.
