Centerforce II or Dual Friction for stroker. Luk RepSet for OEM-grade daily. Skip the cheap eBay 'stage 3' clutches — they grab or fade.
Stock XJ clutch is rated to handle the 4.0L's 220-225 lb-ft. Stock-replacement clutch options are well established:
Luk RepSet (LK-04-181 or 04-194 depending on year): OE-quality kit with pressure plate, disc, throwout bearing, pilot bearing. ~$220. Best for stock-power daily drivers.
Centerforce II (CFT361049): higher clamp via centrifugal weights, organic disc, holds 300+ lb-ft. Pedal effort similar to stock. The go-to stroker clutch. ~$280.
Centerforce Dual Friction: holds ~400 lb-ft, slightly higher pedal effort, ceramic-organic disc. For built strokers or V8 swap. ~$380.
Avoid: 'stage 3' / 'racing' eBay clutches with 3-puck ceramic discs. They grab on/off and chatter at engagement — miserable on a trail rig that needs smooth crawl-out. Real race clutches are for race cars.
Flywheel: resurface the OEM flywheel when changing clutch. If cracked or burned, replace. Stock OEM steel is fine for stroker; only V8 swaps require an aluminum or steel flywheel matched to the new engine.
