Front Wheel Bearing Hub Replacement — XJ Cherokee

Difficulty 2/51.0–2.5 hrs$65–1401990-2001

Front wheel bearings on the XJ are sealed unit hub assemblies — when they go, you swap the whole hub. One side takes about an hour if the hardware cooperates.

The 1990–2001 XJ Cherokee uses a sealed, non-serviceable unit bearing on the front Dana 30. There's no packing, no adjustment — the whole assembly presses onto the stub axle and bolts to the steering knuckle face with three bolts. When the bearing fails, the fix is full hub replacement.

Most XJ front bearings die somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, though trail use and water crossings accelerate that timeline. The failure is usually audible before it's dangerous, but a badly worn front hub can contribute to steering wander and has been linked to feeding existing death wobble symptoms, so don't treat it as a low-priority item once you've confirmed the bearing is bad.

**1984–1989 XJ note:** Earlier models used a different bearing configuration — some years had serviceable tapered roller bearings rather than a unit assembly. This guide covers the 1990–2001 hub assembly. If you're on an '84–'89, confirm your bearing type before ordering parts.

**Replace both sides together.** If one front bearing is worn enough to make noise, the other has similar miles and similar stress history. The second hub costs $70 and saves you another hour under the truck a few months later.

A failing front hub sounds like a low growl or rumble that varies with vehicle speed, not engine RPM. The definitive test: change pitch when you gently swerve left and right at 40–50 mph. Loading the wheel (turning toward it) will quiet a bad bearing; loading the opposite side will amplify it. Bad right bearing = noise increases when turning right. Bad left bearing = noise increases when turning left.

With the truck on jack stands, grab the tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and rock it side-to-side. Any perceptible lateral play — not smooth rotation — points to the bearing. Also check 12 and 6 o'clock for up-and-down play, which is more likely a ball joint. On ABS-equipped XJs, a failing hub tone ring can also trigger the ABS light.

The XJ community has learned this the hard way: cheap off-brand hub assemblies fail fast. Bearings rated for 75 mph highway loads that see trail flex and water immersion need quality steel and proper sealing. Timken (HA590032) and SKF (BR930295) are the go-to choices. Figure an extra $15–20 over parts-counter generics for a unit that will actually last. If a supplier's hub comes in under $40, plan to do this job again in 12 months.
