Recommended air-down pressures for XJ tires

Difficulty 1/50 hrs$25–1001984-1990, 1991-1995, 1996, 1997-2001

Air down for traction. Sand: 12-15 psi. Rocks: 8-12 psi. Mud: 15-18 psi. Snow: 12-15 psi.

Airing down expands the tire's contact patch, soaks up small obstacles, and dramatically improves traction off-road. Rough XJ guidance:

Air back up at the trailhead before highway driving — driving at trail pressures heats the sidewall and damages it fast. Use a quick deflator (ARB E-Z Deflator, Staun) and an onboard compressor or Viair 400P.

For 33" tires on stock backspacing, you can typically safely run to 8 psi without beadlocks but the bead will let go if you spin hard.
