The XJ's 5x114.3 bolt pattern is common enough that budget steel wheels are plentiful — but backspacing is the spec that actually determines whether they clear your lift or rub your fenders.
The XJ Cherokee uses a 5x114.3 (5x4.5") bolt pattern with a 71.5mm center bore — the same pattern as many early Jeep Wranglers, Dodges, and Mitsubishi trucks, which means wheel selection is wide. The trap for first-time XJ wheel buyers is focusing on bolt pattern and ignoring backspacing. Backspacing is the distance from the mounting face to the back lip of the wheel, and it directly controls how far inboard or outboard the tire sits.
On a stock-height XJ, the factory wheels run roughly 5.5" backspacing. On a lifted XJ running 33s or 35s, you want 3.75" to 4.25" backspacing. Too much backspacing on a lifted rig tucks the tire into the fender and causes rubbing at full droop; too little pushes the tire outside the fender flare and creates handling and bearing load issues. The sweet spot for a 4"–4.5" lift with 33s is 3.75" backspacing. For 35s with minor trimming, 4.0" is workable. The Pro Comp 69 Series and Black Rock 908B hit that 3.75" spec at a price point ($70–$80/each) that makes buying a full set of take-off tires with new wheels cost-competitive with a used set of aftermarkets.
The 15" vs 16" question comes down to what tires you're running. BFGoodrich KM3 and KO2, Toyo Open Country, and Cooper STT Pro all offer 15" sizes in the 33"–35" range that are widely available and often cheaper than the equivalent 16" sizes. The only advantage of 16" is that a few ultra-budget tires only come in 16", and some shops carry more 16" options. For rock crawling, 15" gives you a slightly taller sidewall at the same overall diameter, which gives marginally better deflection at low PSI. Neither is dramatically better; match the diameter to your tire selection.
