Before you buy a winch, build this kit — a kinetic rope, two rated shackles, a set of traction boards, and a 60" Hi-Lift will get a stuck XJ moving again in more situations than a winch without a second vehicle.
A winch is the ultimate recovery tool, but it needs a tree, anchor, or recovery partner to work. The starter kit approach covers the self-recovery scenarios a winch can't: deep sand and mud (traction boards), mild stuck situations where a buddy can pull you (kinetic rope), and getting the nose back on the trail when you've bottomed out (Hi-Lift). For an XJ at around 3,600–4,000 lbs, none of these tools require more hardware than what's listed.
The kinetic rope is the heart of the kit. Unlike a static tow strap, a kinetic recovery rope — made from nylon that stretches 20–30% under load — stores energy like a spring and releases it into the stuck vehicle. That snap effect gets a 4,000 lb Cherokee moving from a dead stop with a single rolling pull rather than requiring the recovery vehicle to be yanked against a fixed line. The 7/8" x 20' size is appropriate for the XJ's weight class; 1" diameter ropes are built for full-size trucks. The Bubba Rope Sidewinder is the budget-accessible version; Yankum and ARB both make excellent ropes at higher price points.
The two shackles go on the factory XJ tow hooks (front) and the factory tow hitch receiver or rear shackle tabs (rear). The XJ has usable factory recovery points front and rear — a significant advantage over some platforms that require aftermarket bumpers before any recovery gear matters. A 3/4" screw-pin shackle rated above 9,500 lbs WLL is plenty for an XJ; the 41,850 lb WLL on the Rhino USA pair is well into overkill territory, which is exactly what you want in a recovery component. The traction boards are for the deep sand and loose mud situations where traction breaks down before the vehicle gets physically stuck — you dig out around the tire, slot the board in, and drive off. The Maxtrax MKII is the benchmark; cheaper boards flex too much under the torque of a spinning 33" tire and crack.
