Early Bronco Specific Spares
The early Bronco's specific failure modes are concentrated: ignition, fuel delivery, and driveline wear. Address these three areas in your parts kit and you've covered the real risk.
Fluids โ Early Bronco Specific
302/351W: 10W-30 conventional โ not thin synthetic, as the rope rear main seal on older engines does not respond well to it. Dana 44 diffs front and rear: 80W-90 GL-5. Dana 20 transfer case: 80W-90 GL-5.
Cooling
The 302 runs hot under load. Carry both upper and lower radiator hoses matched to your year and engine, plus 1 gallon of 50/50 coolant. Hose clamps on trucks this age are often original and corroded โ carry 4 correctly sized hose clamps along with the hoses.
The points ignition is the single largest field failure risk. If you haven't converted to Pertronix, do it before you go โ and carry backup points regardless. The carb rebuild kit and mechanical fuel pump are the second and third priority. Solve those three and you've covered the early Bronco's real trail risks.
