Early Bronco Trail Spare Parts Guide

The early Bronco runs mechanical everything. No TIPM, no ABS, no drive-by-wire. Its failures are straightforward, physical, and almost always field-repairable. Pack to the ignition first.

Universal Spares โ€” All Vehicles

These spares belong in any trail rig. The early Bronco additions below are layered on top of this baseline.

Early Bronco Specific Spares

The early Bronco's specific failure modes are concentrated: ignition, fuel delivery, and driveline wear. Address these three areas in your parts kit and you've covered the real risk.

Complete points-and-condenser set โ€” this is the #1 carry The points ignition is the most common trail failure on non-Pertronix early Broncos. Carry a complete set. If you've converted to Pertronix, carry a backup set of points anyway โ€” the Pertronix module can fail, and reverting to points takes 20 minutes.
Autolite 2100 carburetor rebuild kit The accelerator pump diaphragm fails โ€” engine dies on snap throttle. The rebuild kit contains it. Carry the whole kit in a zip-lock. It's small, costs $15, and is a complete fix on trail.
Mechanical fuel pump (Carter M6892 or equivalent) The 302/351W fuel pump is on the block and fully accessible. When it fails, the engine dies. Replacement is 20 minutes with the right part. Write the part number on the bag before you leave.
Dana 44 front axle U-joints (Spicer 5-760X, carry two) The front axle U-joints are the first thing to go when the grease runs out. Two joints, small and light. Worth carrying on any trail run regardless of how new the joints appear to be.
Dana 20 output shaft seal The Dana 20 output shaft seal leaks when worn. Replacement is field-doable with basic tools. If it starts leaking on trail, cap your fluid loss and replace the seal on the spot. Carry the National Seals part number.

Fluids โ€” Early Bronco Specific

302/351W: 10W-30 conventional โ€” not thin synthetic, as the rope rear main seal on older engines does not respond well to it. Dana 44 diffs front and rear: 80W-90 GL-5. Dana 20 transfer case: 80W-90 GL-5.

Cooling

The 302 runs hot under load. Carry both upper and lower radiator hoses matched to your year and engine, plus 1 gallon of 50/50 coolant. Hose clamps on trucks this age are often original and corroded โ€” carry 4 correctly sized hose clamps along with the hoses.

Early Bronco Field Verdict

The points ignition is the single largest field failure risk. If you haven't converted to Pertronix, do it before you go โ€” and carry backup points regardless. The carb rebuild kit and mechanical fuel pump are the second and third priority. Solve those three and you've covered the early Bronco's real trail risks.
