Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point. On a JT used for towing or trail descents where brakes run hot, degraded fluid can boil before you think it will. Flush it every two years or any time the fluid looks dark.
The Gladiator JT specifies DOT 3 fluid from the factory, but DOT 4 is backward-compatible and offers a higher dry boiling point (446°F vs 401°F). If you do any serious towing or downhill trail driving, running DOT 4 is the right call — the extra margin costs $10 more per flush. Motul RBF600 is the go-to for track or hard-use applications; for most JT owners, any quality DOT 4 is sufficient.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture from the air through micro-permeation of the brake lines and reservoir cap seals. Even in a sealed system, fluid absorbs enough water in two years to drop the boiling point measurably. The visual test is straightforward: fresh fluid is clear to light yellow; fluid with absorbed moisture goes dark brown. If yours looks like weak coffee, flush it now regardless of calendar date.
**Safety note:** DOT 3/4 brake fluid is a paint stripper. It will damage your JT's paint if spilled on bodywork. Work carefully near fenders and the firewall. Nitrile gloves protect your skin.
DOT 3 fluid (factory spec): $8–12 per 32 oz bottle. One bottle handles a full flush with fluid left over.
DOT 4 upgrade: $12–22 per bottle depending on brand. Motul RBF600 at the top end is overkill for most street/trail JTs; Prestone DOT 4 at $12 is fine.
Vacuum bleeder kit: $25–40 (Motive Products, OTC). A one-time purchase that eliminates the need for a helper and makes fluid flushes routine. Recommend it for anyone doing their own brake maintenance long-term.
Shop charge for a brake fluid flush: $80–120. This is a 45-minute job for a shop with a power bleeder. The DIY savings are real, but the main reason to do it yourself is knowing it was done and done correctly.
