Recovery Gear Essentials for the Jeep Gladiator JT

Difficulty 1/50.25–0.5 hrs$150–6002020-2024

The Gladiator JT's factory recovery points are functional for a basic strap pull. What's behind them — and what you carry in the bed — determines whether you get out on your own or wait for help.

The JT Gladiator comes with two factory front tow hooks (rated at 4,500 lbs each on the Rubicon; standard Steel Tube bumper hooks on Sport/Overland) and a rear receiver hitch (1-1/4" class I on Sport, 2" class III on Sport S and above). The factory hooks are rated for vehicle recovery and adequate for a D-shackle and kinetic rope pull on firm ground. They are not rated for anchor-point winching — for that, you need a proper front bumper with rated anchor points.

**The recovery gear every JT owner should carry:**

**Kinetic recovery rope:** The single most important piece of recovery equipment. A kinetic rope (also called a snatch rope) stretches under load and stores energy — when the recovery vehicle accelerates, the rope snaps back and delivers an additional kinetic impulse that breaks the stuck vehicle loose. Traditional tow straps with no stretch can yank shackles loose or snap under dynamic load. Warn's Epic series or ARB's equivalent in 7/8" x 30' is sized correctly for the JT's weight range. Budget $120–160 for a quality kinetic rope — this is not the place to buy cheap.

**Traction boards:** MAXTRAX (Australian-designed, widely used in overlanding) and Smittybilt's X20 boards address the most common stuck scenario: the truck has good traction somewhere on the axles, but one or two tires are spinning in loose material. Slide the boards under the spinning tires and drive out. MAXTRAX boards are rugged and reliably grip tire tread; Smittybilt boards are adequate and come in at one-third the price. Mount them on the front bumper, bed rails, or roof rack so they're accessible without unpacking the bed.

**D-shackles or soft shackles:** Two bow shackles rated at 4.75 tons each are the minimum. Factor 55 FlatLink is a shackle-mount upgrade that reduces snag points on a winch hook. Soft shackles (Dyneema construction, rated at 11+ tons) are lighter and safer than steel — if a soft shackle breaks under load, it drops rather than whipping. Carry at least one soft shackle.

**Snatch block:** A 4WD.com or ARB 8-ton snatch block runs $45–60 and doubles your winch's effective pulling capacity by creating a mechanical advantage redirect. If your winch is pulling a stuck JT with 5,500 lbs of load and your winch is rated for 9,500 lbs, a single-block redirect effectively gives you 19,000 lbs of potential — while also reducing stress on the winch motor and rope. Carry one.

**Gloves:** High-tensile recovery straps and synthetic winch rope store enough energy under tension to injure hands severely if they fail or slip. Leather or high-dexterity work gloves are required for any recovery operation — not optional.

**Shovel and traction base plate:** A full-size military folding shovel ($25–40) digs out a buried axle or creates a base for the high-lift jack on soft ground. A ¼" steel plate (12" x 12") under the jack base prevents it from sinking in sand or mud.

The factory front tow hooks on Rubicon trims are adequate for strap pulls. If you're running a winch on an aftermarket bumper, that bumper's shackle mounts are your primary forward anchor — verify they're rated for your winch's line pull.

The rear hitch receiver is not a recovery point. A proper rear recovery setup on the JT uses either a receiver-mounted D-ring (Warn 8-ton receiver shackle, ~$35) or a dedicated rear bumper with rated recovery tabs.

MAXTRAX boards (set of 2): ~$290–310. Worth it if you overland solo in loose terrain. Survivable quality.

Smittybilt X20 boards (set of 2): ~$85–100. The budget choice — adequate for occasional use, not as durable in high-frequency deployment.

Warn Epic kinetic rope 7/8" x 30': ~$145–165. Correct sizing for JT weight class. Buy one quality rope rather than two cheap ones.

ARB snatch block 8-ton: ~$55–65. Required for effective winch use in technical terrain.

Complete kit (kinetic rope + 2 shackles + snatch block + traction boards + gloves): $350–550 depending on board choice. Reasonable baseline for a trail-capable JT.
