The Gladiator JT's longer 137" wheelbase means more underbody exposure per trail obstacle — skid plates that fit the JL won't cover the full length of the JT, and buying a JL set is money wasted.
Stock JT underbody protection is minimal outside of a factory transfer case skid on Rubicon trims. The oil pan, transmission, fuel tank, and the stretch of unprotected frame between those components are all exposed to rock strikes on any trail with ledges or embedded rock. For a truck with the JT's capability envelope — and the market it attracts, which skews toward owners who actually use the truck — running without skids is a one-trail mistake.
The coverage priority on the JT is: (1) engine/oil pan, (2) transmission, (3) transfer case, (4) fuel tank. A kit that addresses all four gives you full protection from bumper to bumper on the underside. The JT's longer wheelbase means the fuel tank sits further back than on the JL, so JT-specific skids extend coverage rearward in a way JL skids can't. Teraflex's JT kit ($499) covers the first three in one purchase; the Rock Hard 4x4 system ($699) extends full coverage to the fuel tank and adds heavier plate gauge (3/16" vs. 1/8") for a rock-crawling-focused build. Rubicon Express's $449 kit is the value option and covers the essential surfaces without the upgrade-gauge material.
Plate gauge matters when you're shopping. 1/8" (11 gauge) steel is adequate for trail skimming and ledge glances; 3/16" is the right call for sustained rock contact in a crawling context. Aluminum skid plates exist in this price category too — they're significantly lighter but dent rather than deflect on hard hits, which can transfer impact energy to the component they're protecting. Steel is the correct choice for JTs going on rock.
