Drain and refill the AX-15 with 3.3 quarts of 75W-90 GL-4 (not GL-5) every 30,000 miles — 60-minute job, magnetic drain plug, no special tools.
The AX-15 is a 5-speed Aisin manual that came in TJs from 1997 to 2004 paired with the 4.0L. It's the strongest manual Jeep ever bolted behind the 4.0 and it shifts cleanly for decades when the fluid is fresh. What kills an AX-15 early is the wrong fluid — and there is a persistent forum debate about what "the right fluid" actually is. The factory service manual specifies GL-3, but GL-3 is essentially extinct in the consumer market. The Mopar PN for the original fluid (75W-90 GL-3) has been superseded.
The honest answer: run 75W-90 GL-4. GL-5 gear oils contain sulfur-phosphorus additives that attack the AX-15's yellow-metal synchronizer parts and will cause crunchy shifts within a few thousand miles. Redline MT-90 (75W-90 GL-4) is the most-recommended choice on TJ forums for a reason — it shifts smoothly cold and hot. Pennzoil Synchromesh is the other widely-used option, especially for owners who want a slightly thinner feel in cold weather. Stay away from anything labeled "gear oil 80W-90" off the auto parts shelf unless you confirm the GL-4 rating on the bottle.
Capacity is 3.3 quarts (some sources round to 3.25). The drain plug is on the passenger-side bottom of the case and takes a 15/16" or 24mm socket. It's magnetic — pull it after every change and wipe the metal paste off. Fine glitter is normal. Chunks, shavings, or anything the size of a grain of rice means a synchro or bearing is on its way out and you should pull the transmission for inspection.
Crack the fill plug FIRST before opening the drain. The fill plug is on the driver's side of the case (square 3/8" or 1/2" drive). If the fill plug is seized and you've already drained, you have no way to refill without removing the transmission.
While you're under there: feel the shift rail boot at the top of the transmission for cracks (a torn boot lets water into the case), inspect the rear yoke seal for weeping, and check the slave cylinder line for swelling if you have a hydraulic clutch.
