The TJ's factory rear bumper is plastic and offers nothing — no real tow capacity, no recovery rigging points, and no tire carrier for a full-size spare. A steel replacement with D-ring mounts is the minimum; a swing-out tire carrier makes a 35-inch spare manageable.
The stock TJ rear bumper is cosmetic. It can't carry a full-size spare on a swingout (the bumper isn't rated for that load), its trailer hitch receiver is undersized, and it has no D-ring or shackle mounts for recovery rigging from the rear.
For trail rigs, rear D-ring mounts are essential — they're the anchor points for a tree saver strap or a snatch block setup when you need to be pulled from the rear. Most steel rear bumpers include two integrated D-ring receivers. Verify this before purchasing — the cheapest units sometimes omit them.
For overland and hard-use rigs running 33s or larger, a swing-out spare tire carrier is worth the extra cost. Running a full-size spare on the stock tailgate is only feasible up to about 32-inch tires — beyond that, the hinge stress fatigues the tailgate sheet metal. A swing-out carrier bolts to the rear bumper and has its own dedicated hinge rated for the tire weight.
Two tiers: bumper-only (Smittybilt SRC, Rugged Ridge Spartan) runs $220–$360, includes a 2" receiver hitch and D-rings, and is a 90-minute install. Bumper-with-swing-out-carrier (Iron Rock Offroad, Poison Spyder) runs $600–$950, adds a dedicated tire carrier rated for 35s, and takes 2–3 hours. The swing-out carrier is a meaningful upgrade if you regularly run full-size tires off the back.
1. **Remove factory plastic bumper** — typically 6 bolts. The spare tire carrier (if stock) is separate and usually bolts to the tailgate.
2. **Disconnect any trailer wiring** at the factory trailer connector if present.
3. **Position steel bumper at rear frame rails.** Hand-thread all bolts before torquing.
4. **Torque frame mounting bolts** to kit spec — typically 50–65 ft-lb.
5. **Reconnect trailer wiring** to factory or aftermarket connector integrated in new bumper.
6. **If swing-out carrier:** mount the tire before driving to verify hinge clearance from tailgate and rear quarter panels at full swing arc.
Bumper-only with D-rings and hitch: $220–$360. Bumper with swing-out tire carrier for 33–35" tires: $600–$950. The swing-out is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade on any TJ running larger than 33s — worth the extra $300 over a bumper-only setup.
