A weld-on steel truss reinforces the D30 housing against flex and bending under 33"+ tires and aggressive trail use. Cheap insurance for serious builds.
The Dana 30 axle tubes are thin-wall and the cast center section can flex under heavy load, especially with 33"+ tires. A truss is a weld-on steel reinforcement that runs along the top of the axle tubes and ties into the differential housing, preventing flex and bending.
Options: IRO bolt-on/weld-on truss ($180), Artec Industries truss ($230), Ruff Stuff D30 truss ($150). All require some welding to install (most are bolt-on at the diff cover but weld-on at the tube ends).
The truss is most beneficial for: rigs running 33"+ tires hard; rigs with front lockers (which add stress to the housing); rigs that have bent a stock D30 in the past. For mild trail use at 31s and below, the truss is unnecessary.
Install: clean the axle tubes thoroughly, position the truss for proper fit, tack weld, then fully weld. The diff fluid must be drained and the cover removed first. Often done at the same time as a gear/locker install.
